Best of Cinque Terre

Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Cinque Terre
The five towns that make up the “five lands” of Cinque Terre, Monterosso, Corniglia, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, have together been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. They pull plentiful crowds to take on the stunning cliffside trails that thread along the rugged stretch of coast between them and, of course, linger in the photogenic pastel-hued houses and steep streets of the settlements themselves. Whilst Cinque Terre is best known for its trails, the towns have plenty to offer travelers, as do neighboring vineyards famous for local white wines.

Rather than trying to cram it all in as a day trip, kimkim travelers can stay at least two nights, which will allow time to hike some of the beautiful but challenging trails and take scenic boat tours along the coast. Truly dedicated hikers can make it through four towns in a day, but there’s no shame in dropping off into one of the towns along the way or switching over to the train that can ferry you onward. At the end of your hike, do not miss a bite of wood oven-fired focaccia and a refreshing juice or gelato concocted with the region’s famously sweet lemons.
