Megan Lower

I am the director of Wanderlust Voyages and the primary point of contact for travelers. I view travel as a way to expand your world view, learning about different cultures and immersing yourself in the local experience. I'm not a fan of traveling halfway around the world (or even just across the nearest border) just to stay in familiar hotels, eat familiar food, and try to go about the cities/towns the way you would at home. Travel is about enjoying new destinations and experiences to their fullest, which means visiting local restaurants, unique accommodations, and, when possible, talking to local residents.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"All of Morocco. From Tangier to the Sahara to Marrakech, and everything in between. Whether you are looking for luxury, adventure, history, or any combination thereof, we can put together the perfect itinerary for you. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"I am a lawyer-turned-travel-expert, a journey that began with my first trip to the Sahara Desert. I was so enchanted with Morocco, and the desert region in particular, that I wanted to share it with everyone. This started the conversation with my husband, Belghit (who was born in nearby Rissani), about how we could accomplish bringing friends, family, anyone and everyone to explore the wonders of Morocco. Since then, I dove headfirst into the travel business, expanding my knowledge of both the industry and Morocco. I've already been there more times than I can count, and each time I go, I visit more accommodations, try out new activities, and seek to increase my knowledge of the country, from the ever-changing popular cities like Fes and Marrakech to the more obscure off-the-beaten-path areas like Oujda and Taroudant."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Oh, so many... From transportation adventures to interactions with wild animals to weather failing to cooperate, there are always things that can make travel a unique experience. However, one of the most eye-opening and unique experiences was part of that first trip to the Sahara. I went to visit the home where Belghit grew up. It was a mud-brick house part of an ancient ksar that dates back to the 1700s. Making our way through the winding path inside, cool in the dark away from the bright sun, passing by old mule stalls, a well that once served as their primary source of water, and climbing up the winding steps to bare mud rooms, each opening into a central courtyard. The kitchen still contained a daubed mud oven for baking bread and no running water. It looked like something that you would expect to be from centuries past, not a mere two decades. And yet, that's how Belghit grew up, running down the road to his family's date farm. It was an incredible experience, very eye-opening, and one I will never forget."

Morocco is truly a blend of modern and ancient. Its commitment to its history and religion is impressive. The people are warm. I can say with all sincerity that my cultural life experience is more enriched now that I’ve had a taste of Morocco. Thank you KimKim.

I’m so glad you enjoyed your time and survived the heat! I’m sorry to hear the rug people gave you a hard time, we do try to let people know about the haggling in our FAQs, but not all sellers are the same, of course. Luxury Oasis Camp Merzouga was unexpectedly impressive. My girlfriend booked a tent with AC, which was a blessing given the extreme heat. Second, this itinerary has it all: historical sites, cultural performances, natural beauty.
Our accomodations were beautiful. The Wanderlust team was very responsive when issues came up, as with the sandboarding. We never felt like we were on our own, which was a relief to us since we didn't speak the language(s).

Our visit to Fes was great, as was our tour guide. We learned so much about the history and handicraft of Morocco. I think I enjoyed Fes more than Marrakech. I did not know a person could be allergic to the Sahara until we got there. So much dust. But the dunes are beautiful, the camp we stayed at was lovely, and the guides were so friendly. We got lucky to have one clear night where we could see all the stars. It was amazing to visit the market, tour the oasis, and eat Berber pizza. May is very hot in the desert, so I'm glad we went before summer.

There was so much to this trip, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. The Roman ruins were neat. We went on a hike with a fun guide near Gorges Dades, and that was beautiful. We saw Ait Ben Haddou, which is still impressive despite the earthquake damage. We toured the Majorelle Gardens. We saw exciting new construction neighborhoods and gorgeous old historical neighborhoods. We drank strong coffee and refreshing mint tea. We managed to eat our way through many delicious dishes: tagine, tanjia, pastilla, tride.

We're thankful to this tour and our wonderful guides for making sure we had a great time in Morocco.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your time! And we love hearing wonderful things about our guides and drivers - I'm so glad Hamid helped to make your trip incredible. Megan, Winnie and Hassan are a winning team! In the year and a half of planning it took to get this trip launched, Megan and Winnie were consistently respondent and patient through all the details and needs we had over time. Megan really listened to what I was looking for, adjusted the itinerary I had planned on my own, and provided all the sites we wanted. I can tell that she took the time to make the best itinerary for us. Winnie's ability to manage the fine details, always with a smile was greatly appreciated. I've worked with several partners of KimKim and I think this was the best of all 4.

As for Hassan, he MADE our trip. From the moment he stepped into the van, we became a mini-family. His presence and leadership made us feel well supported, protected and cared for in every way. He provided us with just the right amount of information as we travelled through the country. Both he and Lacksen were true professionals. If we needed anything, the two of them showed up in a whim. We could see that Hassan would do whatever it took to give us a satisfactory experience and in the end, it went well beyond our expectations. Truly flawless.

Minor change I'd suggest to the itinerary - give one more day to Fez and one less day in Tangier. Or cut Tangier out altogether. Going to Asilah was not worth a day; it felt like padding.

Also, for Megan - there was conflicting advice on the tipping. Winnie told us 100 per day for the driver/guide and you told us 50. The information in the guide said something else as well. I know it's up to our discretion but being consistent internally is recommended.

*The airport pickup was a mess. 4 of us had to take cabs - 2 of whom were alone in an unfamiliar country. My sister & I took a cab - even though the driver had our names. The owner of the transportation service was rude to me on the phone when I didn't ask my cab driver to turn around and go back to the airport.

Fez top and tour went well too, similar to Marrakesh.
Chefchaouen was a great stop and glad I did spend a day there even unguided. Would have probably preferred to do 2 days there and maybe just 1 in Fes.

Driver (Ahmed) performed his job ok, no major issues.

Overall the Riads were good but there were issues.
Had an issue with the 2nd one in Marrakesh (Des Trois Palais) as they did not have me on the list to check-in and had to wait about 2 hours for them to have my room ready. Also did not like the one in Fes. It was not the same Riad as in description (Dar Tresor), but was Dar Chrifa. Smallest room I had in entire trip was in at the top of building (4th floor) - smaller than the mountain gite. Was next to the terrace; 3 separate times in 2 days I had people pounding on my door to enter the terrace. It is not marked and is very dark there. Do not book a single at that location, the other rooms were massive compared to that.
